But, like any other tool, giving someone a jump cue isn't going to give him or her the ability to use it effectively. It requires technique, touch and practice to be able to execute the various jump scenarios. I think it adds another dimension to the game. It certainly requires a tighter safety if your opponent has the skills to jump out of it.

Lower My Handicap!

If I had a quarter every time that I heard "lower my handicap or I'm overrated" I don't think that I would ever have to use my own money to play pool again.

Since this league is based on handicaps there are lots of people trying to "beat the system". So whenever they have a "key" player move up there has to be someone to blame, becuase surely it is not because that person "deserved" to be raised [:)]

So today I am going to go over a few things about handicaps and I am going to start with my own. If I had any control over handicaps wouldn't it make sense that I would try to lower my own or my teammates first? Do people honestly think that I personally care if they don't think they are rated correctly? I mean seriously. So next time you think that I am worried about raising your handicap or getting it lowered please think again.

Now if you are that arrogant to think that John is really caring about your handicap again you need to regroup. He has approximately 1,100 people in this league so if you think that he is just sitting on the edge of his seat to see how you are doing week to week so he can raise your handicap you are sadly mistaken. I know his life isn't that exciting but I am sure that he can find something to do.....even if it is just out killing things like Bambi.

There are also many weeks that John doesn't even enter the scores, but has someone else do that and here's a news flash she doesn't play pool or really know any of the people that do. Although, I know she would greatly appreciate it if we were neater in filling out our paperwork and tried harder not to get everything on the scoresheets such as beer, soda, dinner, ashes, etc. and so on.

Finally since everyone is always complaining to John - scared that some other team is going to "get over" better than themselves - he does have people that check certain players out when he receives numerous complaints. Now believe it or not he does listen to what they have to say and will act accordingly.

Bottom line though next time you think that a division rep, John or anyone else in the APA organization is trying to "personally" raise you or "sabbatoge" your team.....please get over yourself and move on. Trust me we all have families, troubles, jobs (except for Eugene), etc. to be worried about everyone else's handicaps. So just play to your potential, be polite and we can all get along and have some fun!

Mary Blythe

If I was ever a scorekeeper (which rarely happens)I probably wouldn't mark it as a safety shot. So then if I don't mark it as a safely shot and let's say I am in Vegas is my team going to be penalized for not marking defensive shots? Because if I am understanding you correctly you the bottom line is not what anyone else thinks but what the scorekeeper thinks is "intent". There are times when it is not going to be possible to make a ball in a pocket no matter who you are and in those cases maybe just lucky to make a good hit. Again I don't think that is a defensive shot but according to what you are saying it would be and I think that this just punishes and discourages the lower skill level players.

Mary Blythe
